ELDERLY PEOPLE
The older and older people are, the more likely it is that over time they will lose habits that were previously performed normally. It is also usual that the elderly become more vulnerable to diseases because they tend to contract several of these and can become more dangerous for them than for the younger people.
That is why it is intended through this blog to encourage younger people to become more sensitive and help develop a better old age for the elderly
How can we help the elderly? 😶💭
Below you will find a list of things we can do to help an older adult 💗
1. Let's help adults express their feelings and emotions
Helping the elderly to express their feelings or emotions will help them to release what they feel and not compress the emotions. Making an elderly person express their emotions will help reduce or prevent anxiety, they will be able to feel that their feelings matter and that they can talk about this, they will show themselves to be a freer person.
To help the elderly to express their emotions, we can have a dialogue with them, we can have the elderly write a letter, we can make a trivia game and have them answer according to what they think, we can propose an activity where the elderly draw and so on.
It is important to promote spaces in older adults where they can relax and entertain themselves by doing activities. This will help them increase creativity and artistic abilities, it also decreases feelings of loneliness and increases self-esteem. It also contributes to the mobility of the elderly.
To help the elderly in this regard, we can carry out recreational activities, have the elderly plant or water the plants, provide them with spa sessions, read them a book, etc.
3. Create spaces for socialization
The elderly need to feel that they are not alone, they need to dialogue with more people, they need to express themselves and spend time with different people. This is why creating spaces where adults can talk with different people will reduce the feeling of loneliness that many of them have. In addition, it will prevent the elderly from falling into depression or sadness.
For this, we can meet an old friend of the old man to talk, we can talk with their family, so they can listen them, or invite them to discuss a specific topic.
4. Help prevent mental illness in the elderly by performing physical and cognitive activities
One of the most common diseases that occur when people become old are mental illnesses (Alzaimer, depression, dementia, anxiety, etc.). To avoid this, it is recommended that the elderly practice exercises (walks, jogging, aerobics) and also perform cognitive activities. For example, fill out a questionnaire, a word search, a crossword puzzle, games like Sudoku, read the newspaper and give their personal opinion, etc.
We can help the elderly to work on their minds and avoid mental illness in the future by doing this type of activity.
5. Let's not leave them alone
Most of the elderly must go to the doctor, they must bathe, they must eat healthy and so on. However, with the passage of time, some of them lose their skills and are unable to do basic things of the daily routine as they did before. This is why it is important that we do not leave them alone and provide assistance to the elderly in certain activities.
We can help the elderly by accompanying them to medical appointments. Also cooking healthy food. Also help them to cross the street and in general in the things that they need our help and solidarity.
